Can't understand why Brent or Shinedown isn't a household name.

I've been following shinedown for 4 years now-and just went to their show in SF last week. He is thee most phenomenal singer out there in the rock world. His vocals are sick. What is the deal with Shinedown still being relatively unknown. I'm thinking its maybe because I live in California. But wasn't sure.

He should be bigger than Chad Kroeger and bigger than any of those other rock dudes out there. He blows them out of the water with vocal ability.

I'm hoping Amaryllis brings them up to the level they deserve to be at. I'm hoping the next time I go to a party here in northern cal, when i tell people I went to see Shinedown-they don't say "Who's that?"

I know right? It sucks! Allot of good rockbands are unknown where I live because most people listing to hiphop or R&B. Sometimes I wonder which way our generation is going to... I alreaddy think it's getting pretty horrible... (Nothing personal)

Had a conversation the other day with someone I had not met before who does know quite a bit about music. He had never heard of them...well he does now :)

I just play people the music or the dvd or the videos and trust me Shinedown takes care of the rest...

All we can do it play it for all our friends, and get them to hear the kick ass vocals, and guitar! I al always humming some son, or playing some song on my phone, my riends start hearing the music, humming it themselves, one person at a tine!!1

Thankfully, Shinedown gets quite a bit of airplay in North Central Wisconsin. I think that Brent Smith has one of if not the best male voice out there.. clean, crisp, and his range is amazing ! His lyrics are mean something !! He is a true musical poet !

I agree whole heartidly with you Shinedown is awesome I live in Davenport Iowa and I really hope they come back here real soon. I think Brent is absolutly great one of my favorite songs is The Crow and the Butterfly that song gives me peace when I think about a child I lost 10 years ago. There is something about Brent that touches my soul and I really hope someday I can meet him to tell him how important that song is to me.

Shinedown Fans Are The Best! I love when I meet someone who understands my Love for this band!

I think they are better known on the East Coast. I have been a fan since 2005 and I think they are the best rock band around.

Shinedown is an amazing band. They are awesome live. Every CD is great and their songs have helped me through many difficult times. I have friends that love them as much as me and I have friends who don't understand why I am such a big fan. (You almost have to feel sorry for them because they don't get it). They are not my normal kind of music. I listen mostly to metal, all types of metal. But, Shinedown gives be balance and helps me through the dark days. I listen to them everyday.

I think some of my friends are getting tired of me too but the way I see it is if someone finds it annoying that I found something that inspires me...well...that actually shows that they are insecure and I am passionate. It only hurts me when its someone who claims to love me. I can honestly say that if you want to get to know me from the inside out well then listen to 95 percent of Shinedowns music and then you will know me. I owe a lot to this band. They have helped me escape the darkness in my mind many of times. I have my sanity and they help me keep it!

My non-fan friends are probably getting tired of me posting their videos on my facebook page, but I can't help it. I'm pumped up about seeing them in Biloxi later this month, I'm like a kid with a new toy

@ Nance_A, I agree, I've had the same thing happen... In fact, I've nicknamed Shinedown "Oh, those guys!"... I constantly have people say they've never heard of them, then when I play a song... "oh, yeah, THOSE guys, I've heard them... :)

Bayougirl1978's picture

I agree!!! I have two types of coworkers... the ones who have never heard of Shinedown, and the few who have, and are AMAZED that I have heard of them too, lol!

I most diffently will! Thank You!

It blows my mind. I live in Iowa and I have told every person that has come into the coffee shop that I work at within the last 2 months about my meet and greet with Shinedown. I get the same response more often then I should! "Who's Shinedown?" ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!!!! So I pull out my phone and start my Shinedown playlist. 90 percent of them all know more then one song real well and some of them didn't even realize all those familiar songs they liked so much were from the same band. I thought Shinedown was common knowledge until I stepped outside my circle. I can assure you that almost every person that has crossed my path so far this year NOW KNOW GREATNESS BY NAME! SHINEDOWN!!!!!!!!!

In re toi the radio station response: XM Octane plugs them a lot, depending who is on air. That is kinda whatpushed me to look more into them. Someone had said that they were the most badass phenomenal band he'd ever seen do acoustic. It was right around the time Not Strong Enough came out. Also, back in 04 the station we advertised with in Youngstown, OH (Rock 104), did asmuch justice as a new rock station could do with a newer band. So there are some stations that really try. Thoughmy local stations kinda suck. It takes getting on the phone or online and asking the station to play it sometimes. Call them out on it(in a nice way) and ask to hear what you want to hear.
In re to the original question: I went backto my old school where shinedown played in 2006. People like me who are really into the rock genre knew who I was talking about, but most people listening tothe more mainstream stuff didn't know who they were. For the Amaryllis contest thismadeit fun to talk to people. I've posted youtube videos too, and peopleare like,'why don't I know this....this stuff is awesome'.
As far as big though...I have seen a lot of bands I liked (like Nickelback) get too much away fromthemselves and I lose the intense interest I had in their music. They became too mainstream, and most of their stuff sounds the same. So then you hear them everywhere, and everyone knows whio they are. When I tell someone about Shinedown,I relateit to things like the songs that appeared in WWE,Expendables, and Hockey commercials, and peopleare like, That's them? They Rock!

well, shinedown should be as big as the foo fighters, you should just be able to mention thier names and they will have offers to play at big arenas like wembley! if they ever play wembley or something that big, and record it, i would by that the first second its realeased, its sad that they are so unkown tho :(

It is madness. I cant think of one other Modern Rock band that has lyrics that touch your soul, or instrumentals as good as Shinedown. Im from Northern Ireland and so many people have no idea who they are. Im teaching them all though! :-)

I hear ya bro,I get that in new york as well. Shinedown does not get a lot of air play...mainy lady Ga Ga crap. I agree though Brent has a voice that pounds and the band backs him up super.

Nance_A's picture

The problem is the radio stations don't always tell their liseners who a song is by. When I talk about Shinedown and people ask me "who's that" I play Second Chance on my phone and they all know that song, just not who is it by. The radio stations need to start saying who a song is by so people out there will know. Shinedown is an incredible fucking rock band and the best I've ever heard!

I agree with you, I just became a fan of shinedown, his vocals are amazing, and the lyrics are outstanding, they should be more well known than what they are, the world needs to know who this band is!
